With a star-studded list of guest contributors and more than enough funding, rap BFFs El-P and Killer Mike (tka Run the Jewels) have just one more item to check off before beginning work on their Meow the Jewels remix album: find the cats.
Run the Jewels have chronicled the recruiting process in a new video. It mostly breaks down to El-P hilariously rapping at cats and gauging their reaction — which ranges from total disinterest to minor meowing. At one point, he quips, “This is going to be tough. They keep showing me their assholes.”
I won’t spoil whether he finds a Rum Tum Tugger (that’s a Cats reference, folks), but it does make this dog-loving writer re-think his opinion on cats as heartless fiends who will one day drive their owners to madness. Watch it below.
(Ed. Note: If El-P is looking for real talent, CoS Publisher Alex Young’s three cats — Zooey, Dorian, and Maggie — are available for recording in Chicago).
The “Meow the Jewels” Kickstarter page has already raised nearly $60,000 (of an original goal of $42,000), with six more days to go. Any additional profit will go to benefit the families of Eric Garner and Mike Brown.
Meanwhile, Run the Jewels’ sophomore album, RTJ2, arrives on October 28th via Mass Appeal. The 11-track effort eatures collaborations with Rage Against the Machine’s Zack de la Rocha, Blink 182’s Travis Barker, Beyoncé collaborator Boots, and Foxygen offshoot Diane Coffee. For non-cat-related tunes, check out the singles “Blockbuster Night”, “Oh My Darling Don’t Cry”, and “Close Your Eyes”.
