Foxygen describe their recently released third album, …And Star Power, as a “svelte 82-minute run time of psych-ward folk, cartoon fantasia, soft-rock indulgences, D&D doomrock and paranoid bathroom stompers.” Based on a recent live performance in support of the double album, they should amend that to include “ballsy, punk-inspired performance art.”
The band’s appearance on Friday’s WGN Morning News started off innocent enough, with a spirited rendition of “Brooklyn Police Station” that featured back-up singers and some, um, interesting choreography from singer Sam France, who made the rather brave choice to rock a blazer shirtless. Right around the halfway point, though, the band collectively lost its shit, delivering a truly manic, almost unhinged performance that sees France alternate between contemplative wallflower and shrieking fiend.
They didn’t burn down the stage, nor did they receive quite the same reaction as Ty Segall’s WGN performance from a few years back, but it’s nonetheless a sight to behold. How’s that for a wakeup call, Chi-Town? Watch the replay here. Do a shot every time France throws his arms in the air.
