On November 18th, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib will release the Knicks Remix, an EP featuring reworkings, instrumentals, and assorted bonus material from this year’s collaborative LP, Piñata. Today, MadGibbs has unveiled the six-track effort’s crowning jewel: a remix of “Knicks” featuring Action Bronson, Joey Bada$$, and New York rapper Ransom.
While the multi-MC guest spot is as common in rap as sparkled jumpsuits are in pop music, this particular configuration is especially interesting. Gibbs’ original verse, mainly bragadocious rhymes, gels nicely with the soul-centric groove. Meanwhile, Bronson brings the wacky stream of consciousness (is this not his first reference to Downtown Julie Brown?); Ransom echoes a bit of Gibbs’ brooding boastfulness; and Bada$$ wraps it all together with his “young and hungry” shtick and wordplay. Not everybody’s quite on the same page lyrically and aesthetically, but it just makes for an entertaining experience anyways.
