On October 28th, rising Canadian indie rockers Ought will release a new EP, Once More With Feeling. The follow-up to this year’s promising More Than Any Other Day, the forthcoming four-track effort features two re-recorded early tracks along with one brand new song and an album outtake. After previewing the release with a reworking of “Pill”, the band returns with a new version of “New Calm, Pt. 2”.
Whereas the 2012 version of the track was confined to just five and a half minutes, this new take lets the song breathe with more ferocity and a longer runtime. As he does with most of the band’s catalog, frontman Tim Beele uses his anxious delivery — which can turn from fiercely aggressive to wryly droll in mere seconds — to carry the whole number. During the song, he can even be heard proclaiming, “Hear me now that I am dead inside, that’s the refrain!” and wondering curiously, “Who invited Paul Simon? I didn’t invite him.” For all the swirling post-punk squall, the track sure packs its own sense of humor.
