On December 19th, a new adaptation of Annie that updates its original Depression-era setting to present day New York City will hit theaters. With the film’s modern setting comes a modern soundtrack featuring three songs by Sia, including a collaboration with Beck. As a preview of the release, Sia’s first contribution to the film has been unveiled: a modern reimagining of “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile”, a classic number from the 1977 musical.
Sia has almost entirely reworked the song, giving it a glossy and 21st century sheen. Along with booming pop production also comes new lyrics. While I’m not too familiar with the original source material, I’m fairly certain the girls at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage didn’t kick off the song with, “America, let’s turn it up!” That said, Sia’s a pleasant take on a classic musical and might just introduce a new generation to Broadway. The film was directed by Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends With Benefits) and executive produced by Jay Z and Will Smith. It stars Quvenzhané Wallis as Annie and features Rose Byrne, Cameron Diaz, along with Jamie Foxx as 2014’s answer to Daddy Warbucks, Will Stacks. The film’s official soundtrack is out on November 17th via Roc Nation Records / Madison Gate Records.
