Take one listen to CHVRCHES’s excellent debut album, The Bones of What You Believe, or their contribution to the Lorde-curated Hunger Games soundtrack, and it’s apparent that their music resides primarily in the synthpop realm. However, strip the arrangements of their synthesized trimmings, and it’s likely you’ll find a basic backbone of pure pop songwriting that’s both keen and timeless. It’s not surprising, then, that the Scottish outfit would pay homage to a band whose pop-rock repertoire is similarly enduring, legendary even: Fleetwood Mac.
During VH1’s “You Oughta Know” event in New York City last night, a concert dedicated to highlighting up-and-coming acts, CHVRCHES frontwoman Lauren Mayberry and Bleachers teamed up to cover Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 classic, “Go Your Own Way”. Mayberry’s no Lindsey Buckingham, but she holds her own, her vocals a sweet and an enthralling siren. (Side note: With a new Grimes and Jack Antonoff collaboration recently announced, is it possible CHVRCHES and the Bleachers frontman might hit the studio soon, too? For what it’s worth, it sounds as though Antonoff is already very familiar with their work.)
