A few years back, The Flaming Lips and Yoko Ono joined forces in the name of Christmas to record a new version of “Atlas Eets Christmas”, which originally appeared on the Lips’ 2007 secret holiday album. Now, a few New Year’s shows, a Letterman appearance, a Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends collaboration, and a split EP later, and the strangest of bedfellows have reconvened once more to cover Ono and John Lennon’s classic “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”.

What was once a simple, joyous little ballad that paired holiday cheer with pleas for world peace has been transformed completely. From its earnest and cheerful beginning, the track quickly spirals into a ginormous psychedelic haze, a hazy bluster marked by lush choral harmonies, plenty of sleigh bells, and a little arena rock-ready guitar. If you go to parties where folks spike the eggnog, this’ll be your jam. Listen in below.

The Lips/Ono collaboration is one of 43 tracks on Amazon Prime’s “All Is Bright” holiday compilation. Also featured are Liz Phair (“Ho Ho Ho”), Beth Orton, Lucinda Williams, and the Rosebuds, among others. Amazon Prime users can listen to the full playlist here.
