The Unicorns’ Alden Penner and Michael Cera link up for new EP and tour

Plus, listen to their new single "Breathe To Burn"

Last year, The Unicorns reunited for a leg of tour dates with Arcade Fire and reissued their third and final album, Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone?. Though the Canadian outfit’s seemingly slipped back into dormancy come 2015, band member Alden Penner has kept busy with the release of his JUNE 04, a collection of early demos, and now, plans for an EP of brand new material.

Canada in Space is slated to drop on June 29th via City Slang. Joining Penner is none other than actor Michael Cera, who has previously logged studio time with Unicorns’ Nick Thorburn in the indie rock supergroup Mister Heavenly. As a preview of the EP, Penner’s unveiled “Breathe To Burn”, an eight-minute monster of a track that musters together everything from gloomy synthpop to dusty garage rock. Listen in below.

Penner describes the Sci-Fi- themes behind Canada in Space:

There are more Canadians than any other nationality represented in the planned Mars colony. The Canada in Space EP is an imagining of the dreams, reveries, phantasms, hallucinations, psycho-spiritual projections, naïve mythologies, actions, visions and experiences of an abandoned crew before, during and after its permanent journey to Mars; the compression of time; dispersion, fragmentation of states and generations in space; ultimate detachment & wormholes.

In support of the EP, Penner and Cera will hit the road for a European tour this summer.
