50% of all marriages end in divorce, and it seems Homer and Marge Simpson will be among that statistic. In an interesting development to The Simpsons canon, Homer and Marge’s television marriage will come to an end during the premiere episode of season 27.
As executive producer Al Jean explained to Variety, “In the premiere, it’s discovered after all these years Homer has narcolepsy and it’s an incredible strain on the marriage. Homer and Marge legally separate, and Homer falls in love with his pharmacist, who’s voiced by Lena Dunham. We’ll have cameos from the other women from Girls.”
As Simpsons diehards will point out, this is not the first time Homer and Marge will have separated. In season eight, Homer briefly filed for divorce so that he could re-marry her with a proper ceremony. (Ironically, 12 seasons later it’s revealed that their second marriage was invalid due to a technicality involving Reverend Lovejoy’s ministerial certification. They do end up getting re-married officially.)
It’s unclear whether Homer and Marge’s divorce will be a multi-episode story arc, though it’s hard to imagine TV’s most iconic couple not getting back together at some point (if not by the end of the first episode).
Update – Thursday, 10:00 a.m.: It appears the separation will be a short term storyline, as The Simpsons Twitter account has gone out of its way to clarify that “Homer and Marge are not breaking up.”
