As we noted earlier this year, David Bowie is co-writing Lazarus, a new play based on Walter Tevis’ The Man Who Fell To Earth, which tells the story of an alien who comes to Earth in search of water for his barren home planet. Though Bowie starred in the 1976 film adaptation, actor Michael C. Hall will take over the protagonist role in the Off-Broadway version.
Hall is best known for his role in Showtime’s Dexter and HBO’s Six Feet Under, but he’s also appeared on stage in Hedwig and The Angry Inch, Chicago, and Cabaret.
Bowie won’t be in the spotlight per se, but he’ll still play an important role in the Ivo van Hove-directed production. In addition to penning the script alongside Enda Walsh, who earned a Tony Award for his work on the Broadway hit Once, he’s expected to contribute new songs as well as new arrangements of older songs.
Preview performances of Lazarus will begin on November 18th at New York Theatre Workshop; the official opening night is slated for December 7th.
