Sons of Huns unveil thrashy riff-fest “Osiris Slain” — listen

Portland trio preps sophomore LP, While Sleeping Stay Awake

Portland metal trio Sons of Huns are set to release their sophomore album, While Sleeping Stay Awake, on July 21st via RidingEasy Records. In anticipation, the band has teased the album’s opener, “Osiris Slain”. Fans of old-school Metallica take note: This one is a thrashy riff-fest in the vein of Kill ‘Em All — with a few surprises of its own.

The song is essentially split into two sections, opening with a speed metal riff that carries the first half. It’s got the swagger and tempo of a top-down highway driving song as guitarist/vocalist Pete Hughes howls the tale of the Egyptian god Osiris’ demise. Meanwhile, he slings riff after riff, throwing in southern Molly Hatchet licks. Signaling the second half is a prog breakdown that recalls Voivod’s masterpiece, Nothingface. What opens like a standard, straight-ahead thrasher ends in a flourish of complex syncopations and chord-change wizardry — a testament to Sons of Huns’ diverse songcraft and musicianship.

To celebrate the release of While Sleeping Stay Awake, which also features guest appearances from Scott “Wino” Weinrich and Melvins drummer Dale Crover, Sons of Huns will be playing a release show on July 23rd at Mississippi Studios in Portland. Pre-order the physical LP/CD from RidingEasy here.
