MXMS premieres new song “Anna” — listen

Self-described "funeral pop" band casts black magic with its latest offering.

Exploring music’s dark side has never been all that difficult for artists; just tune in to the works of Chelsea Wolfe, Cold Cave, and Zola Jesus. However, not all acts go so far as to name their studio space “the grave” or incorporate funeral themes into their visual aesthetic. Enter: MXMS, an up-and-coming Los Angeles duo that does eerie, gloomy synthpop the way that it should be done.

After partnering with the eclectic fashion designer Asher Levine to produce the first ever “funeral runway show,” MXMS — whose name stands for “me and my shadow” — are gearing up for a productive summer. Their limited edition 7-inch, featuring the tracks “omg” and “Rx”, will be out on July 24th through Grand Jury. Additionally, the two-piece, comprised of singer Ariel Levitan and Shiny Toy Guns co-founder Jeremy Dawson, has let loose a new single called “Anna”.

The song “is a snapshot of the wild darkness in an adolescent female mind,” Levitan tells Consequence of Sound, adding, “Excitement, fear, lust and curiosity mangle into a desire to be desired that she is willing to die for.”

Here, flourishes of shoegaze and new wave abound here, with Levitan’s good-meets-evil vocals leading the way like a sorceress conducting a bit of black magic. For his part, Dawson pieces together a chilling backdrop of foreboding keyboard and bass that’ll make you think twice about turning off the lights. Listen in below.

Catch the duo live at the following US dates.
