Ezra Furman turns in acoustic cover of LCD Soundsystem’s “I Can Change” — listen

From a five-track covers EP exclusively at Rough Trade

Ezra Furman explores all types of sonic wonderlands on his latest release, Perpetual Motion People. The album plays with all types of pop and rock sounds in a conglomerative declaration of existence in modern America. Which is to say, his recently released cover of LCD Soundsystem’s “I Can Change” is a bit of a left-hook from an artist known for left-hooks.

Instead of splashing about in all the instrumental joy he could have used, Furman strips everything away and leaves just an acoustic guitar and his reverbing vocals. While the lack of synths mean it’s not as warm as LCD’s original version, the sparseness of it all highlights the intimacy of the lyrics, with Furman expertly hitting those James Murphy highs. Take a listen below.

This version of “I Can Change” is included on a five-track covers EP included with all copies of Perpetual Motion People sold at Rough Trade, which just so happens to be where Furman kicks off his tour tonight. Other cover on the record include Beck’s “Devil’s Haircut”, Melanie’s “The Good Book”, The Replacements’ “Androgynous”, and Arcade Fire’s “Crown of Love”.
