Instagram has announced a ban on the hashtag #EDM. A banned hashtag means the term is no longer searchable and content cannot be shared through the marker.
Though sure to upset many, the ban actually has nothing to do with electronic dance music or, as might be supposed, drug use. As Instagram spokesperson Gabe Madway told TIME that the prohibition comes after the term was used too frequently to spread decidedly NSFW material. “In this case, #EDM was being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity,” Madway said specifically.
The banning of #EDM comes just weeks after Instagram received backlash for banning #curvy. That hashtag had also been used to share nude images, but the app’s users renounced the move, saying that the hashtag was meant to be a body positive term. Eventually, #curvy was reinstated, though with heavy monitoring.
It’s yet to be seen how the Instagram community, let alone the dance music scene, will react to the policy.
