Songwriter Dan Ballard didn’t intend for My Dead Air to become more than a side-project. For years he saw his gig as guitarist for pop-rock oufit Until June as his primary project, but things began to slow down with the band after 2012’s Young And Foolish. It was then that he began to rethink My Dead Air as his new focus.

He holed up in his basement studio in Southern California and started working on tracks. During the sessions he worked as both musician and producer, recording the record on his own. Now Ballard’s finally releasing the songs as his first proper solo album, The Thief Who Knows My Name, out August 14th. Ahead of the release, he’s shared a new single called “Reckless With Your Memories”.

The Ballard ballad (sorry) moves at a wistful, breezy pace. His airy vocals intwine with acoustic guitar strums. lead guitar flourishes, and even tasteful chimes. Harmonious backing vocals pop in and out of the mix, adding to the ghostly feel of the track. It’s a blissful and enrapturing three minutes, with Ballard’s comforting voice guiding through the wondrous fog.
