R.I.P. “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, legendary wrestler turned cult actor, has died

Wrestling's most popular villain also starred in movies, television, and released his own music

Legendary professional wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper has died. The Canadian native suffered a heart attack in his Hollywood, California home on Thursday night. He was 61 years old.

Piper’s massive popularity inside the ring led to several roles on the silver screen. Most notably, John Carpenter’s 1988 sci-fi film They Live, in which Piper’s character battled humanoid aliens.

On television, he guest starred on shows including Walker, Texas Ranger, The Outer Limits, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. In the latter, he played a professional wrestler named “Da’ Maniac” who was a parody of Mickey Rourke’s role in The Wrestler.

He also was a guest VJ on MTV, appeared in the music video for Cyndi Lauper’s “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough”, and even released his own single, “I’m Your Man”.
