At first glance, Kanye West’s Video Music Vanguard acceptance speech at the VMAs Sunday night was a 13-minute stream of conscious in which he attacked awards shows, assessed his own public perception, and announced a run for president.

But as a newly discovered alternate edit proves, the VMAs actually served as Kanye’s first crack at comedy. Yes, as TV writer David Elmaleh reveals, we were just watching it the wrong way.
