Never trust a bookie. Though odds seemed to be in favor of Radiohead penning the next James Bond theme song, it now appears that Sam Smith has confirmed his involvement with the track. The UK crooner posted a not-so-subtle hint on social media in the form of a ring bearing the symbol for SPECTRE, the criminal organization at the center of the next Sam Mendes-directed, Daniel Craig-starring Bond film.
Update – Tuesday, September 8th: The news is official. According to a press release, “Writing’s On the Wall” is the first James Bond theme recorded by a British male solo artist since 1965. The song, which features production from Jimmy Napes and Disclosure, will be available to purchase and stream beginning September 25th.
If Smith is indeed the man behind the music, he’ll be following in the footsteps of recent artists to deliver a Bond theme like Adele, Jack White, Chris Cornell, and Madonna. Any lingering doubt about who exactly wrote the song could be assuaged as soon as Tuesday, as Hitfix reports the theme will be released tomorrow morning. Either way, it looks like someone’s out £15,000.
Spectre, due out November 6th, also stars Ralph Fiennes (M), Naomie Harris (Moneypenny), Ben Whishaw (Q), and Rory Kinnear (Tanner), Christoph Waltz (Oberhause), Andrew Scott (Denbigh), Dave Bautista (Mr. Hinx), Monica Bellucci (Lucia Sciarra), and Léa Seydoux (Madeleine Swann).
