Welcome to Death Row biopic officially in the works

Straight Outta Compton scribe S. Leigh Savidge is currently shopping the film to studios

Death Row Records

Following the success of Straight Outta Compton, word surfaced of a companion film that would focus on another prominent West Coast rap collective, Death Row Records. The Hollywood Reporter has now revealed new details on the project.

Titled Welcome to Death Row, and not Dogg Pound 4 Life as previously reported, the biopic will be based on a book and documentary by S. Leigh Savidge, chronicling the careers of Tupac, Snoop DoggNate Dogg, Warren G., and Kurupt amid an especially violent and turbulent era in hip-hop.

Savidge, who also had a hand in creating Straight Outta Compton, is currently shopping the film to various studios. One possible roadblock is the current lack of music licensing, but THR adds that Savidge was able to bring in N.W.A.’s music after beginning work on Compton.

There’s no word on the film’s cast or director, though TMZ previously reported that none of the actors featured in Straight Outta Compton were expected to reprise their roles.

The announcement of Welcome to Death Row means there are now three Tupac-related biopics in the works. Directors John Singleton (Poetic Justice, Boyz n the Hood) and Carl Franklin (Out of TimeHouse of Cards) are helming competing standalone films about the life of the California MC.
