Simon Pegg says he “didn’t love” the Star Trek Beyond trailer either

"There's a lot more of what I would call ‘Star Trek stuff' than the trailer shows"

The first trailer for Star Trek Beyond hit the web this week, and the response has been as cold as a Klingon’s heart. Fans have complained that it’s nothing but a barrage of action shots and special effects, lacking the subtlety and adventure that made people Star Trek fans in the first place. And you can count series star Simon Pegg amongst those ranks.

Walking the red carpet for the Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiere, Scotty was asked what he thought of the Beyond trailer. “It was very action-packed. It was surprising,” he said. “I find it to be kind of the marketing people saying, ‘Everybody come and see this film! It’s full of action and fun,’ when there’s a lot more to it than that. I didn’t love it, because I know there’s a lot more to the film. There’s a lot more action and a lot more character stuff, and a lot more what I would call ‘Star Trek stuff.’ ”

He reiterated that he understood the idea behind the trailer, saying, “They’ve gotta bring a big audience in. They’ve gotta bang the drum. To the Star Trek fans I’d say hang in there, be patient.” He then appears to notice the camera on him and cringes a bit as he realizes he may have just undersold his own film. Watch Pegg answer the question below.

Still, there’s reason to believe Pegg knows what’s he talking about, as he wrote the film alongside Doug Jung. We’ll find out if Beyond can redeem the franchise after the underwhelming Star Trek Into Darkness when it hits theaters on July 22nd, 2016. In the meantime, revisit the controversial trailer below.
