There are just seven days left before FOX reopens The X-Files for a six-episode event series. So when Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) asks Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) “Are you ready for this?” in the new trailer for the show, he might as well be talking to fans.
The latest preview opens with a flying saucer crash-landing near a river. A voiceover from an teed-off Special Agent Mulder reveals, “All these years we’ve been deceived. A decade of my life. I’m being led by my nose through a dead end.” A chill-inducing montage of clips follows, including a familiar voice warning, “We have a small problem: They’ve reopened the X-Files.” Throughout the teaser you’ll catch glimpses of a strange birth, a creepy message, and a deadly explosion. It’s impossible to know what all of this will lead to, but as Scully says at the end, “This is just the beginning.”
In fact, she may be right. According to EW.com, series creator Chris Carter revealed at the winter Television Critics Association press tour that he’d secretly written a script for a third X-Files film, one that “would have to be a big-budget movie.” He admitted to 2008’s The X-Files: I Want to Believe being a “misstep” and said a third film “has to be more like the first movie.” Perhaps more immediately pressing, he hinted that this new six-episode event may not be the last of X-Files on TV. “If we do well in the ratings, I can’t imagine we wouldn’t be asked to do more,” Carter said, (spoiler warning) adding that the current season indeed ends on a cliff-hanger.
But for now, we definitely have the January 24th premiere to look forward to. Watch the latest trailer below.
