As per tradition, Grammys weekend kicked off Saturday night with a tribute concert to the MusiCares Person of the Year. This year’s honoree was Lionel Richie, who saw his music sung by Rihanna, Usher, Stevie Wonder, and Florence Welch.
The evening’s most unlikely performer was Dave Grohl, which he himself admitted upon taking the stage. “I know what you’re thinking, how the hell does Dave Grohl know Lionel Richie?” Turns out the R&B legend reached out to Foo Fighters frontman after he broke his leg on tour last summer.
“When I got out of surgery I was in my hospital room and started getting flowers and get-well cards,” Grohl recounted. “One day my wife comes into the room and says, ‘Wait till you see the muffin basket that just showed up.’ This was the biggest muffin basket I’ve ever seen, it was like 500 muffins. But I didn’t know who it was from. A few days later, I got a text from my tour manager saying ‘Lionel Richie called and wanted to know if you got that muffin basket?’ Lionel, tonight, I didn’t bring you a muffin basket, I brought you this.”
Grohl then crooned an impassioned rendition of “You Are”. Watch fan-shot footage below.
