Chad Ubovich began Meatbodies as a solo adventure, but he was never really alone. For the project’s self-titled debut album, he was joined by Ty Segall, together PANGEA’s Erik Jimenez, and producer Eric Bauer (Mikal Cronin, Thee Oh Sees). Now, he’s found himself a legit band by recruiting Kevin Boog and Patrick Nolan, who will introduce themselves as Meatbodies with a new 7-inch single.
The single’s A-side, “Valley Girl”, shows that though the lineup has changed, the sound is still Meatbodies. Hooky riffs are churned out through a scuzzy mix, swirling around a steadily bopping bass line. Ubovich’s vocals and lyrics oscillate between playfully snotty and distantly romantic from one syllable to the next. It might read as a typically weird psych number at first, but listen closely and you’ll hear Ubovich has a point to make; it’s just hidden beneath freaky waves of garage rock.
