A Giant Dog premieres new song “Get With You and Get High” featuring Britt Daniel — listen

Despite his repeated assertion that all he wants to do is “get with you and get high,” Spoon’s Britt Daniel is a pretty busy guy. So when he carves out a few days in Austin to work with a band not many people outside that city’s inner circle have heard of, it’s probably something to which you should pay attention. Daniel dropped by the studio while A Giant Dog was recording with prolific producer Mike McCarthy, lending his signature rasp to the band’s drugged-out nihilist anthem “Get With You and Get High”.

Listening in to this mellow, abstracted pop tune, it’s easy to imagine everyone involved just lounging around the studio on couches for hours after McCarthy taps “Record,” their expressions oscillating between rapture and indifference. We’re not sure that’s how it actually happened, but the track does stand out from A Giant Dog’s typically faster, heavier stuff. “While writing, we had Britt in mind,” the band explains, “and knew we could get him to say whatever we wanted. We got drunk on the idea and ended up with this abstract party monster ballad.”

Vocalists Sabrina Ellis and Andrew Cashen join Daniel in three-part vocal harmonies, and Cashen lends another unexpected element to this mix, playing a distorted toy keyboard he claims to have stolen from a hostel in Chicago.

To solidify the Daniel connection, A Giant Dog are now signed to Spoon’s former label, Merge Records. Their third album, Pile, will be released via Merge in May. Pre-order it here, and listen to “Get With You and Get High” below.
