Going to Mars and back isn’t the only adventure Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig will share on-screen. The Martian co-stars will reunite next for Alexander Payne’s curious social satire, Downsizing.
As Variety reports, the story follows an Omaha man who leaves society to join one of the many bite-sized communities littered across the world, where the residents are shrunk to a “tiny fraction of their size.”
Reese Witherspoon, who worked with Payne on 1999’s Election, was originally signed on to star, but had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts. Wiig climbed aboard, instead, joining Damon, Christoph Waltz, and Hong Chau.
Payne co-wrote the script with longtime collaborator Jim Taylor. If you recall, the two nabbed a much-deserved Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay back in 2005 for their hilarious work on Sideways.
Judging from the elevator pitch, which sounds like a hybrid of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Nebraska, it would appear they haven’t lost their magic. This is exactly the type of left-field storytelling theaters are starved for today.
We’ll see relatively soon as production begins this spring.
