Steve Gunn first made a name for himself as the guitarist for Kurt Vile’s band The Violators, but the New York-based musician has spent the last few years carving out an impressive solo career. Gunn’s breezy, deconstructed brand of folk rock is exactly the kind of thing that has traditionally found a home on Matador Records — and wouldn’t ya know it, the label will be releasing his forthcoming album Eyes on the Lines on June 3rd. Serendipity strikes again.
Along with the album announcement, Gunn has shared the video for lead single “Conditions Wild”, an artful cut-and-paste narrative in which he first arm wrestles and then befriends a grizzly bear. If that’s not going to sell you on the damn thing, nothing will. As for the song, it’s a laidback, meditative number that plays to Gunn’s strengths and allows plenty of room for his creative guitar work.
