Adrian Younge and A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad scoring Marvel/Netflix’s Luke Cage

Creating a "’90s hip-hop vibe" for the upcoming Netflix series starring Mike Colter

Composer/producer Adrian Younge and A Tribe Called Quest member Ali Shaheed Muhammad have been been tagged to score Luke Cagethe latest streaming series to come from Marvel’s landmark deal with Netflix.

Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker announced the news of Younge and Muhammad’s involvement in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It’s very sophisticated,” Coker said of the show’s style. “I mean, it’s got a ’90s hip-hop vibe, but it’s really forward-thinking. We have Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad doing the scoring for us.”

Younge and Muhammad previously collaborated on Kendrick Lamar’s untitled unmastered track, “untitled 06 | 06.30.2014”, which was originally intended for their own album.

Luke Cage stars Mike Colter as the titular superhero, who was introduced during season one of Jessica Jones. The spin-off series also stars Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Mahershala Ali as Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes, Alfre Woodard as Mariah “Black Mariah” Dillard, and Erik LaRay Harvey as Diamondback. Rosario Dawson, who has played nurse Claire Temple in every Marvel/Netflix show to date, will also reprise her role.

The show will begin streaming on September 30th. Watch the teaser trailer below.

The announcement of Younge and Mohammad’s inclusion in Luke Cage continues Marvel’s long-running love affair with hip-hop, which recently led to a run of comic book covers designed after iconic rap album covers.
