Next week, Aesop Rock will let loose his first album in almost four years, The Impossible Kid. The Rhymesayers release marks his seventh full-length to date following 2012’s Skelethon. According to Aes, it’s an incredibly personal record that explores death, depression, and unstable family dynamics.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the MC talked about how the LP came to be such an honest piece of work:
“I don’t think I realized I was doing that until it was done, and then a couple people mentioned it and I was like, ‘Oh yeah!’ [laughs]. But I think it’s really my sliding up to 40 record. I think the age of 40 is the thing that looms over our heads and it’s got all these kind of … things that we attach to it. I think it’s just a period of reflection for me in a lot of ways. So I guess that’s kind of the shape that a lot of the songs took.”
In February, we heard lead single “Rings”. Today, Aes returns with a new song called “Lazy Eye”, in which he rhymes about coping mechanisms and health over dusty percussion and skittering bass. Its accompanying live video finds him wandering through the Peculiarium, an oddities museum in Portland.

The Impossible Kid arrives on April 29th. In support, Aes will hit the road for a massive US tour next month.
