File this one under “oh, what could have been.” For years, audiences have waited eagerly for word of a proper sequel to Galaxy Quest, the 1999 comedy starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Alan Rickman that expertly sent up old Star Trek adventures, as well as the diehards who love and obsess over them.
Apparently, the film was a lot closer to finally happening than most knew. On a recent Nerdist podcast, Sam Rockwell (who also starred in the film) mentioned that until Rickman’s unfortunate passing in January, Amazon was interested in reassembling the cast for a second outing: “They were going to do a sequel on Amazon. We were ready to sign up, and [then] Alan Rickman passed away and Tim Allen wasn’t available – he has a show – and everybody’s schedule was all weird. It was going to shoot, like, right now. And how do you fill that void of Alan Rickman? That’s a hard void to fill.”
It seems unlikely at this point that a sequel will materialize, though you never know. It certainly wouldn’t be the same, at any rate. Though, by Grabthar’s Hammer, it’d still be worth getting excited about. And if you’re unfamiliar, Galaxy Quest is absolutely worth seeking out.
