Manchester is a well-documented hotbed of alternative music, but rarely does the English city produce the kind of no-frills rock ‘n’ roll with which The Slovaks butter their biscuits. Drawing on Iggy Pop, The Velvet Underground, and other consummately American influences, the band leaves no room for nonsense in tracks like new single “Meditate”. Though its name may imply something peaceful and profound, this Class-A ripper is anything but.
The same goes for the video, which The Slovaks have shared with us today. Rocking out amidst flashing strobe lights and brightly painted walls, the band turns any prospect of meaningful meditation into a kind of sick joke. “In the video we play on meditation, becoming more animated throughout” explains frontman Adam Saylaby. “The song itself is about the pursuit for something [or] someone real. We are still looking.”
The Slovaks recently signed with Nashville’s Jeffery Drag Records, home to Twin Peaks and Bad Cop among others. The band will release their forthcoming full-length later this spring, but you’ll just have to content yourself with the video for “Meditate” below.
