Last night, some of rock’s finest came together to pay tribute to Big Star’s seminal album Third and other selections from the band’s catalog. The all-star concert, which took place at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, California, was just one of many staged by founding member Jody Stephens over the years.
Among those who were on hand Wednesday night: Jeff Tweedy and Pat Sansone of Wilco, R.E.M.’s Mike Mills, Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo, Jessica Pratt, Kronos Quartet, and Robyn Hitchcock. Late-era Big Star members Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer also made appearances.
Highlights included Tweedy covering “Kizza Me” and “Back of My Car”; Mills taking on “September Gurls”; Stephens, Sansone and Tweedy tackling “When My Baby’s Beside Me”; Kaplan performing both “The EMI Song” and “Take Care”; and Pratt helping out on renditions of “Big Black Car” and “Femme Fatale”.
The star-studded affair was recorded for a DVD/CD release, slated to drop sometime in Spring 2017. In the meantime, check out fan-caught photos and clips from the event below.
