Love him or hate him, Nicholas Winding Refn has turned out some really interesting work, particularly in the past few years. Whether it’s the bloody new wave tone poetry of Drive or the even bloodier, heavily divisive narrative minimalism of Only God Forgives, Winding Refn is making genre movies in ways nobody else is right now, even if he tends to wear his influences on his sleeves.
That’s as true as ever of the first trailer for The Neon Demon, Winding Refn’s latest that will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month. Starring Elle Fanning, in addition to Christina Hendricks and Keanu Reeves among others, the film looks (at first glance) suggests shades of Cronenberg and Lynch, among other directors with clear influences on the Danish filmmaker.
From The Playlist: “the movie follows Jesse, an aspiring model who moves to Los Angeles, only to find her youth and vitality devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.”
Amazon purchased the distribution rights in 2015, but the film will see theatrical release this summer before appearing on the streaming service. Watch the trailer below, especially if hyper-stylized cinema is your thing.
