Primal Scream teams with Spiritualized’s Jason Pierce for cover of S’Express’ “Mantra for a State of Mind” — listen

A dance cover from Primal Scream's Record Store Day release

Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie is a self-described “vinyl junkie,” which explains why he was able to dig so deep for his band’s latest cover. The Scottish rockers will release a limited edition 12-inch single for Record Store Day (April 16th), the A-side of which features a cover of “Mantra for a State of Mind” by late ’80s/early ’90s British house act S’Express.

The band do an excellent job updating the acid house classic for the 21st alternative rock mindset. Part of that is due to the involvement of Spiritualized centerpiece Jason Pierce, who delivers soaring guitar strains that are equal parts psychedelic and jamming. What’s more, S’Express’ Naomi Osbourne’s original backing vocals remain intact throughout, a fitting bridge for the old and new takes.

Check it out below (via NME).

The B-side to Primal Scream’s RSD 12-inch single will be a new instrumental entitled “Gravitational Space (Drifters Wave),” which features a rare appearance by Gillespie on guitar. Below, listen to the original “Mantra for a State of Mind”.
