Kevin Parker, the songwriter behind Australian psych group (and Consequence of Sound’s reigning Band of the Year) Tame Impala, is back to writing new music less than a year after releasing his last album, Currents. As AAP reports, the long-haired Parker has returned home to Perth from Tame Impala’s world tour, and he’s using the rare downtime between shows to get right back into his creative groove.
In an interview with AAP at Australia’s APRA Awards on Tuesday night, Parker reflected on his decision to work on new material so soon. “I think after a long tour and after an album, your brain feels like it wants to relax,” he said, “but at the same time making music for me is something that comes kind of naturally. Just like a brain process.”
Of course, it isn’t exactly difficult for Parker to simply pop in the studio whenever he feels like it. “I’ve got my own recording studio in Perth just down the road from where I live,” he explained, “so there are all sorts of things going on.”
Parker has not yet revealed how he will use this material, or whether it will appear on a forthcoming Tame Impala record. Regardless of when or how it sees the light of day, he can likely count on plenty of receptive ears. Currents ranked among our Top 5 Albums of 2015, and just last night Parker won Song of the Year at the APRA Awards for “Let It Happen”.
