Magic Johnson — a five-time NBA champion and three-time MVP who knows a thing or two about hoops — appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Thursday night to talk about some of the best trash talkers in the game. Michael Jordan is obviously high on Magic’s list, but he’s followed closely by a superstar from a different realm of the entertainment world: Prince.
“He talked so much trash. He thought he had a real jump shot,” Johnson recalled from his brief stint playing pick-up against the Purple One. “I had to remember it was Prince that I was playing against, so I had back off. But he really thought he could play basketball.”
Turns out Magic wasn’t quite as impressed with Prince’s on-court skills as everyone else. As you’ll recall, one of the more famous skits from Chappelle’s Show features a bewildered Charlie Murphy recounting the time Prince and the Revolution schooled his crew in basketball.
Johnson actually had a few priceless stories about Prince, including one about the time Prince used his clout to get a private screening at Magic Johnson Theatres. “He called me up and he said, ‘Magic, I want to come to the Theatres … “So we opened it up, my manager and projection guy, he brings this big bus full of people. Jimmy, when they get off, they’re all in pajamas.”
It’s no shocker that Prince was a confident dude who did pretty much whatever he wanted, but that is some truly next-level clout right there. Is there anyone else in the world Magic would do that for? Kobe? Maybe.
