Not too long ago ago, Lucy Dacus was a film school student. After working up the courage to step up to the mic as a musician, she started performing solo gigs showcasing her wry, open-hearted songwriting. Six months later, she found herself in Nashville’s Starstruck Studio with 10 hours to record a debut album featuring full band arrangements she’d never before played live. That marathon album, No Burden, dropped in February, and her rise has been so swift since then that she’s suddenly found herself signed to Matador Records. Not bad for a 21-year-old film school dropout.
Though No Burden is available now digitally, it long ago sold out of physical copies. That’s where Matador comes in, with the label set to deliver a vinyl and CD reissue on September 9th. In celebration of the signing and impending re-release, Dacus has shared a behind-the-scenes look at her new life as a touring musician in a video for her single “I Don’t Wanna Be Funny Anymore”. The song demonstrates all the best things about the Virginia native’s craft, her unblushing bareness wrapped in catchy melodies and sweet wit. Check it out above.
Dacus will return to the road in July. She’ll keep trekking straight through the album reissue until Austin City Limits in October. Along the way, she’ll be playing gigs with The Decemberists, Frightened Rabbit, Car Seat Headrest, and more. Find her full itinerary below.
