Another to file under “Marvel Studios is a goldmine for all involved parties”: Scarlett Johansson, the much-loved Black Widow who’s going to get her own movie one day because Marvel likes money, has become one of the ten highest-grossing performers in Hollywood, and the highest-grossing actress to date with a total gross box office of $3.3 billion to date.

Granted, “highest-grossing” becomes a little bit inflated when talking about omnipresent Marvel movies, but Johansson has been one of the primary faces of the series from her early-cycle debut in Iron Man 2 onward. In general, Disney has been good to her in 2016, with the one-two box office smashes of The Jungle Book and Captain America: Civil War helping to bump Johansson up into the echelon of box office draws like Tom Hanks and her Marvel co-star Robert Downey Jr.

Johansson has wisely spent her time between Marvel production cycles taking on ambitious projects, whether in the case of a fringe production like Under the Skin or the surprise breakout hit Lucy, the latter of which cemented the actress’ bonafide drawing power as a lead. Few actors ever get to have a half-dozen nine-figure box office draws on their resume, and Johansson has reached that mark in the past five years alone. It’s the “one for me, one for them” model taken to its most successful extremes.

The ranking of top-grossing actors still skews heavily male, but it’s slowly changing, though only Johansson and Cameron Diaz currently sit within the top 20. For some time now, the issue of the disparity in Hollywood between male and female salaries and opportunities has played out in the public sphere, from Jennifer Lawrence’s ongoing campaign against underpaid female leads to the number of actresses who have come forward about making considerably less than their male co-stars. This matters in cases like this one, proof that the actors who get the franchise opportunities simply achieve a kind of drawing power that’s hard to reach any other way in the current marketplace. But the tides are turning, and at only 31, Johansson and other actresses of her generation may well have the chance to give it a shot.
