Word came back in February that The Killers were meeting up with Elton John to work on their follow-up to 2012’s Battle Born. It would seem plausible that the collaboration has already yielded some intriguing results, as Brandon Flowers and the boys premiered a piano-driven number at The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor in Ontario.
The untitled track is pretty much just Flowers at the keys, but the influence from the Rocket Man doesn’t seem too distant. “Have all your hopes been met?/ Have all these years been worth it?” he sings. “Am I the great regret?” He played the song as an intro to “Bling (Confession of a King)”, and you can watch it below via Can It Be the Way It Was.
Just a few songs later, the band debuted another new live song, though it wasn’t one of their own. The band took on a cover of Interpol’s “Obstacle 1” from their 2002 debut, Turn on the Bright Lights. That record came out right around the time The Killers came together, and some might say the latter were influenced by the former in their earlier days. It would certainly appear so from this performance, as Flowers does a nearly spot on Paul Banks while Dave Keuning and Ronnie Vannucci, Jr. handle the track’s distinctive progressions with practiced ease. Check out that clip at the top of the page.
Bassist Mark Stoermer may be taking a break from the band’s live performances, but it looks like The Killers will be getting along just fine.
