Car Seat Headrest mastermind Will Toledo has been known to incorporate big-name covers into his sets, tackling the likes of Radiohead (“Paranoid Android”“Pyramid Song”) and Sufjan Stevens (“Impossible Soul”) in the just the last few weeks alone. During an in-studio session at Milwaukee’s 88.9 radio station this past Sunday, he shared yet another noteworthy update on a song widely known by many.

Amidst his own originals, including Teens of Denial track “Unforgiving Girl (She’s Not An)” and “Times to Die” off Teens of Style, Toledo gifted listeners with an update on “Blackstar” by David Bowie. It’s a sobering and funereal rendition, which can be heard in full over at 88.9’s official website. Update: It’s also streaming below.

Over the weekend, Toledo — the indie rock hero we’ve been waiting for — and his band covered the song during their Pitchfork Festival appearance, as some lucky audience members reported.
