Okkervil River are set to issue a new album called Away on September 9th. The ATO Records release features guests in Marissa Nadler, Jonathan Meiburg of Shearwater, and yMusic, and is said to capture a “turbulent and transitional time” for Will Sheff marked by various forms of loss and death.
In particular, lead single “Okkervil River R.I.P.” laments the band’s previous incarnations; its lineup has shifted over time, with members leaving for new projects or to dedicate more time to their personal lives. Its corresponding new music video, which debuted on NPR.com earlier today, captures Sheff’s mourning quite literally.
The frontman can be seen singing from inside a coffin as a fervent priest, played by actor Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?), above him recites a touching eulogy to a distraught, grieving audience. The clip was directed by Sheff in Upstate New York with the help of director of photography Johnny North.
