Boston’s Somos get nostalgic on new single, “Eternal Yesterday” — listen

A song about how looking back can keep you from moving forward

Many of the songs off of Boston outfit Somos’ sophomore album, First Day Back, touched on themes of struggle. Though the album was released half a year ago already, it’s not as if moving through life has suddenly gotten any easier for the band. Sure, they have plenty to look forward to — they’re playing Riot Fest in both Chicago and Denver — but it’s the looking back that can often bring up troublesome thoughts.

“Eternal Yesterday”, the indie emo band’s new single, expresses that sort of crippling nostalgia right from the title. The song drives forward hard on drummer Mike Benoit’s charged drumming and guitars that alternatively chug and soar from Justin Hahn and Phil Haggerty; for all the drive, however, there’s a sense of miring, as if something is holding the whole thing down. “If we had stayed in line/ Would we have more time?” asks singer Michael Fiorentino. “Why would anyone chose to stay?/ Forays into the night/ Inconsequential and fading from sight.”

Fiorentino tells Consequence of Sound that the song examines how nostalgia “can be a bittersweet salve on a wound, but also a formidable stumbling block that interferes with your ability to move forward.” It’s that same competing dichotomy that characterizes the song its very self.
