Not content to simply reboot every half successful film under the sun, Hollywood’s latest trend is switch characters’ genders. It happened with Ghostbusters, it’s happening with the title character of The Mummy, and now it’s happening with Splash.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is remaking the classic 1984 comedy in which Tom Hanks plays a man desperate for love who falls fo a mermaid, played by Daryl Hannah, who once saved his life as a child. Only this time, there’s a gender-flipped script; Channing Tatum will flap the flippers of the mermaid, while Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street, Workaholics) will play Hanks’ character.

Ron Howard and Brian Grazer will produce through Imagine, while Tatum, Reid Carolin, and Peter Kieran will do the same via Free Association. Newcomer Marja-Lewis Ryan will pen the script.
