Luke Cage is Harlem’s new defender in latest Netflix trailer — watch

Marvel's latest streaming series boasts an impressive soundtrack led by The Notorious B.I.G. and Run the Jewels

Netflix has shared a new full-length trailer for its upcoming Marvel series, Luke Cage. While the first teaser mostly consisted of star Mike Colter being an unstoppable badass, today’s preview gives a look at the larger world that his character inhabits.

That world is Harlem, unlike Daredevil and Jessica Jones, which both took place in Hell’s Kitchen. Though a character calls the neighborhood a “perpetual symbol of hope and prosperity,” Mahershala Ali’s Cottonmouth is intent on bringing it back to an era of shakedowns and intimidation. Beautifully soundtrack by a noir blaxploitation score of strings, we’re introduced to his violent, bloody idea of doing business — and his appreciation for the Notorious B.I.G. As the song shifts to Run the Jewels’ remix of Miike Snow’s “Heart is Full”, Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple returns to convince a reluctant Cage to use his powers for good. And then everyone starts getting their asses kicked.

The trailer also introduces viewers to Frankie Faison as Pop and Simone Missick’s Misty Knight, a staple character form the comics. There’s even a nice little tease of Luke Cage’s original comic book costume in his origin scene. It also further confirms the prominent role music will have in the series (already we’ve learned that each episode will be named after a song by rap group Gang Starr).

All in all, this is shaping up to be yet another step up for Marvel’s Netflix series. Waiting for The Defenders is like anticipating The Avengers all over again. Watch the trailer above. Luke Cage will stream beginning on September 30th.
