Showtime Networks CEO David Nevins may have been one of the last to present at the 2016 Television Critics Association’s press tour, but he made his time count. The highlight of Nevins’ presentation was a bombshell that may actually make Election Night (Tuesday, November 8th) tolerable, as opposed to the apocalyptic hellscape it’s otherwise shaping out to be.
“We’re working very hard to do a live election-night comedy special with Stephen Colbert,” Nevins said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Stephen wants to do it, the studio wants to do it. The thought is, do a live special, Colbert unfettered,” Nevins elaborated. “He promised me he’ll say a couple of curse words, which is important. We’re figuring it out. It’s something we’ve been trying to get him to do for a while.”
That’s great news for fans of Colbert and especially fans of the now defunct Colbert Show, which saw the late-night comedian taking on the current political climate in a much more unhinged, unfiltered way. “It will be interesting to see what Colbert does with no commercial breaks, no language restriction,” Nevins told The Hollywood Reporter after stepping off stage. “He’s kind of excited about it.”
Though the special has yet to be confirmed, there don’t seem to be any major roadblocks. Colbert has that night off from his regular gig at CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and he’s been hinting at a return to his beloved character lately. Whatever the case, some comedy would be a welcome diversion from getting our Canadian immigration papers in order.
