Warner Bros. — always a bastion for good ideas — is moving forward with Ocean’s Eight, its female-led reboot of Ocean’s 11. With production set to begin in New York City this October, the studio has all but finalized the film’s cast, as Deadline reports.
Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, and Helena Bonham Carter were among the four names initially mentioned for the film’s cast. All four ladies are now officially on board, Deadline notes, and they’ll be joined on-screen by Anne Hathaway, Rihanna and Asian American rapper Nora Lun, a.k.a. Awkwafina, who you may recognize from her role in Neighbors 2. An eighth and final lead cast member (hence the title of the film) is as yet unconfirmed. Update: Deadline reports that Sarah Paulson is in talks to join the cast.
Update – November 14th: Ocean’s 11 cast member Matt Damon will have a small role in the film. “I’m doing a little bit in the movie,” Damon told EW. “I haven’t read it yet, but the cast is phenomenal and I’m excited to see what those women do with it. It’s going to be fun.”
Hunger Games writer and director Gary Ross will helm the project, with Ocean’s 11 director Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney both serving as producers. Clooney is also rumored to have a cameo role in the film.
According to Ross, Ocean’s Eight will be a continuation of the original trilogy with Bullock playing the ex-con sister of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean. The prize in question? A necklace from the Met Ball.
As of now, there’s no release date.
