Jamila Woods has joined Lizzo and Joey Purp as the third and final headliner of Consequence of Sound’s upcoming Red Bull Sound Select show, set to take place on Friday, September 23rd at Chicago’s Chop Shop venue. Now, to get pumped for the big day, we’ve put together a short collection of must-hear songs which have helped to make the poet/activist/singer one of the Windy City’s most promising voices.
Four of the tracks — “LSD”, “VRY BLCK”, “Blk Girl Soldier”, “Breadcrumbs” — are taken from HEAVN, her widely acclaimed debut album. Woods “stands tall, offering a voice not only of astute criticism and observation, but also of hope for a better future and black self-love today,” CoS executive editor Adam Kivel wrote in his review. “LSD” features a guest spot from Chance the Rapper, while “Blk Soldier Girl” sees Saba drop in briefly and “Breadcrumbs” includes additional contributions from Donnie Trumpet.
“Sunday Candy”, meanwhile, is a collaboration off Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment’s impressive 2015 project, Surf, and “Blessings” is one of the many star-studded affairs found on Chance’s latest Coloring Book.
