The Pretenders announce Dan Auerbach-produced Alone, share “Holy Commotion!” — listen

Chrissie Hynde's first album under the Pretenders name since 2008

When Chrissie Hynde last entered the studio, it was to create the follow-up to her 2014 solo effort, Stockholm. She was collaborating with The Black Keys/The Arcs’ frontman Dan Auerbach on the new tunes, and while the pairing was working, it wasn’t coming together the way she’d envisioned. Instead, the album grew into a new The Pretenders LP, the first under the name since 2008’s Break Up the Concrete.

Dubbed Alone, the new record is due out October 21st via BMG. It was recorded at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Studio in Nashville, where Tchad Blake (The Black Keys, Elvis Costello) served as mixer and Auerbach himself handled producing duties. He also plays on the record alongside his Arcs bandmates keyboardist Leon Michels and drummer Richard Swift, as well as session musicians bassist Dave Roe (Johnny Cash, Sturgill Simpson), pedal steel player Russ Pahl (Blake Shelton, Don Williams), and guitarist Kenny Vaughan (Lana Del Rey, Ray LaMontagne). Duane Eddy also appears on a track called “Never Be Together”.

As a first listen to Alone, Hynde has shared the lead single “Holy Commotion!”. The track is full of Nashville breeze, clearly bearing Auerbach’s influence in the pulsing, reverberating guitars and the slightly psychedelic lean. Take a listen below.

The 12-track Alone is available for pre-order now, with early purchases coming with an insta-grat download of “Holy Commotion!”. Check out the album art and tracklist below.
