How did David Lynch become David Lynch? That’s the question director Jon Nguyen sets out to answer with his new documentary David Lynch: The Art Of Life, and he does so with the full cooperation of the enigmatic filmmaker behind such classics as Blue Velvet and best-film-of-the-21st-century Mulholland Drive.
The doc will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and it comes at a time when interest in the director has never been higher, thanks to the recent news that his celebrated television show Twin Peaks will return in 2017. Nguyen’s film will trace Lynch’s career all the way back to his childhood in an attempt to uncover the source of his demented artistic visions.
“From the very beginning, we wanted to make a film that focused on his early years, the period before Lynch discovered fame,” Nguyen told Empire. “We felt this period would be rich with clues to understanding such an enigmatic artist. Our intention wasn’t to pull back the curtain on the wizard, but to reveal the individual.”
David Lynch: The Art Life premieres on September 4th in Venice. Check out the trailer above, and a clip from the film below.
