Sun Kil Moon and Jesu have a new collaborative album on the way next year titled 30 Seconds to the Decline of Planet Earth. Before that project, however, the two have teamed up to address a different force that’s destroying our world with every beastly sniffle and grunt he takes: alleged sexual predator and wannabe president Donald Trump. Together, they’ve contributed a song called “The Greatest Conversation Ever in the History of the Universe” to the ongoing anti-Trump music series 30 Days, 30 Songs.
The lengthy, 10-minute cut sees Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek and Jesu trash on Trump, but also force us listeners to examine just how we’ve come to find ourselves in such a freaking mess. “Let’s face it we asked for this fuck because we’ve been surpassed by technology we’ve have our head sup our asses sending selfies around the planet,” they say. Kozelek also talks about Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, and Pokemon.
In a statement, Kozelek offers some additional background on the song:
“I wrote the words to this one in the early morning hours of August 2nd in a New York hotel room, a few nights after I played a Lou Reed tribute concert at The Lincoln Center. A lot of things were happening at once. I remember turning on the TV and seeing that two 12 year old girls were being tried as adults for something to do with a video game, and I had a dinner with friends where the subject of Pokemon came up. Trump wasn’t just all over USA television at the time. I’d spent June and July in Europe and his face was on news stands all across Europe (not Hillary’s). I don’t like Trump, but it’s my opinion that we all have to look inward and ask ourselves how we got here in the first place. We’re all in this together, we all took part in the platform he’s been given, and if you don’t know what I’m talking about, then YOU’RE FIRED!”https://youtu.be/yKNxYjlOobY
Stream “The Greatest Conversation” up above. Over the past few weeks, Franz Ferdinand, Jim James, Death Cab for Cutie, Aimee Mann, and Sleater-Kinney and R.E.M. supergroup Filthy Friends have all contributed to 30 Days, 30 Songs.
