Legendary artist and producer Brian Eno will be ringing in 2017 with Reflection, his first new album of ambient music since 2012’s LUX. Though the direct follow-up to this year’s The Ship, Eno places the album in the same pantheon as his landmark Ambient series, as well as releases like 1975’s Discreet Music and 1985’s Thursday Afternoon.
He doesn’t appear all that comfortable calling it “ambient,” however. “I don’t think I understand what that term stands for anymore,” he said in a press release. “It seems to have swollen to accommodate some quite unexpected bedfellows.” Now he favors terms like “generative” and “thinking music,” noting that the pieces “make themselves. My job as a composer is to set in place a group of sounds and phrases, and then some rules which decide what happens to them.”
The single-track, 54-minute album will be released on January 1st through London’s Warped Records. You can pre-order it on CD or vinyl via Brian Eno’s site. Check out the album artwork below.
